NORTHSIDE BOYS WIN OPENER AT TEXAS TOURNAMENT

Down by four in the fourth quarter, Northside's boys closed out its first-round game at the Arlington (Texas) Classic with an 18-3 run as the Grizzlies downed Fort Worth Dunbar, 80-69. The Grizzlies (2-1) will advance into today's quarterfinal round at 6:30 p.m. against the winner of Thursday's opening-round game between DeSoto and Heath. Northside trailed 66-62 early in the fourth, but junior guard Isaiah Joe hit a 3-pointer; then Joe added another basket to give the Grizzlies a 67-66 lead, and they never trailed again. With the Grizzlies up by two, 69-67, senior guard Tevin Brewer hit eight straight free throws to give Northside a double-digit advantage, 77-67. Joe led Northside with 27 points and made 7-of-10 3-point baskets. Senior forward Kwashea Taylor had a double-double with 18 points and 10 rebounds, and was 8-of-11 from the field while recording three steals and a block. Brewer had 16 points, nine assists and two steals while making all 12 of his free-throw chances. The Grizzlies led at halftime by a point, 40-39, and were still ahead by one entering the final quarter, 56-55. Paragould 60, Northside 46 GIRLS — The Lady Bears were defeated in the opening round of the Greene County Tech tournament in Paragould on Thursday. Northside (2-1) started out strong as the Lady Bears took an early 11-4 lead. But Paragould grabbed the momentum from there, and kept the Lady Bears at bay. "We got into some foul trouble, and they packed into a zone where we couldn't get a shot or a rebound, and when you can't get a shot or a rebound, it's hard for us to press," Northside coach Rickey Smith said. Senior Topazia Hawkins led the Lady Bears with 22 points. Northside drops into the consolation round, and will play Marion at 5:30 p.m. today.
