GIRLS - Northside’s newcomers didn’t take very long to indoctrinate themselves into their first exposure to the Battle of Rogers Avenue. Freshmen Jersey Wolfenbarger and Tracey Bershers combined to score the Lady Bears’ first nine points as Northside jumped out to a 14-0 lead. Junior Sara Bershers, playing in her first Northside-Southside game, also ended up as the Lady Bears’ top scorer with 15 points and also hit three 3's. “I’m very pleased about their performance,” Northside coach Rickey Smith said. “Sometimes, the hardest thing to do is what you’re expected to do in athletics, but I thought our kids played really good defense, I thought we pounded the ball inside early. ... I also thought we did a really good job of spreading the basketball around, I thought we did a good job on the boards. “I was pleased about the performance. ... It’s a good group, I’m very proud of them, we’ve just got to continue to improve.” Senior Cierah Carey capped the Lady Bears’ early 14-0 run by hitting a 3 and finishing off another basket which was set up courtesy of a steal from fellow senior Sydney Green. Northside (17-2, 5-1) went on lead by 24 points at halftime, 44-20. The Lady Bears then built a 35-point advantage by the end of the third quarter. Tracey Bershers added 13 points while sophomore Jazz Coleman had 12. Coleman and both Tracey and Sara Bershers combined to score 29 of Northside’s 44 first-half points. Senior Kelly Carson had 14 of her game-high 16 points in the first half for Southside (3-13, 2-4), which got a win earlier this week when Cabot had to forfeit its win against the Mavs.
